Hi! I’m Laura.
I live in Redmond, Washington (just outside Seattle) with my husband, two kids aged 8 and 12, dog, two cats, and a few nervous fish. After years of chasing my kids around, I now work from home as a freelance writer, which I love.
I was raised in northern Canada, and in those days you’d often find me curled up with a book or my acoustic guitar. It took a move to the Pacific Northwest to unearth my love for outdoorsy things like camping, dog parks, and running in the rain. Although I can’t always find time these days to pluck away at my guitar, I still read books late at night until they slide from my hand to the floor. My articles have appeared in ParentMap, Sacramento Parent, and CityDog.
If adventure can be defined as diving into an experience that you may or may not be prepared for, not knowing the outcome, then parenting has been my greatest adventure yet. I have a nagging worry, however, that growing up in a suburb will be insulating to my kids, leaving them with a cramped comfort zone. To discover their place in the world, they need to experience it.
So now, every chance we get, our family makes a break for it. We travel extensively through the Pacific Northwest and Canada, and have ventured as far as Asia and Europe. Traveling with kids has its challenges, and while I don’t always revel in the chaos that frequently ensues, I’ve learned to roll with it. I’ve started this blog to share my family’s journey as we explore life beyond the burbs, and as a wary, tentative step into the land of social media as a way to showcase my writing.
Welcome to our adventure.
